Snow-melting cable exposed after concrete or mortar placement

Keep the circuit off until the installation is inspected and the required cover is restored.

De-energize and lock out the circuit. Exposed heating cable or a factory splice must not be put into service. A qualified electrician should document the product, location, cover depth and any visible damage, then check conductor and insulation resistance against the factory ratings and installation records.

Restore the cover required for the actual assembly, not a universal 1.5-inch layer:

  • Concrete: the manual places cable 2–3 inches below the finished surface.
  • Asphalt: the manual requires at least 2 inches over the cable.
  • Pavers: the manual has a separate mortar/sand bedding detail; its bedding thickness must not be substituted for concrete or asphalt cover.

Have WarmlyYours and the concrete/masonry installer determine a compatible corrective detail for the affected installation. Do not grind a groove around a live or embedded cable, improvise a thin patch, or assume an undamaged appearance proves electrical integrity. If the cable is damaged, use the approved service procedure before covering it.

After corrective work, repeat and record the electrical tests and observe the material’s curing requirements before energizing.
